Paywatch Partners with IMU Healthcare to Tackle RM34B Malaysian Productivity Crisis with Debt-Free Access to Medical Care

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 AUGUST 2026 – As rising living costs intensify financial pressure on Malaysia's workforce, a pioneering alliance is redefining what employee wellness looks like in practice. Malaysia-headquartered Paywatch, Southeast Asia's largest financial wellness platform and earned wage access (EWA) provider, has partnered with IMU Healthcare to launch MediPay, a first-of-its-kind app feature that allows employees to purchase health and wellness packages instantly, using wages they have already earned.

The primary purpose of the partnership is to support employees during unexpected healthcare moments, when liquidity can become a barrier. Through MediPay, employees can draw on salaries they have already worked for to meet healthcare expenses, removing the need to turn to credit or loans for medical costs. In a second phase, IMU Healthcare and Paywatch will expand the program to include more affordable treatments that standard employee insurance typically does not cover - such as chiropractic, dental treatments, and other therapeutic services - at discounted rates, making services previously out of reach for B40 and M40 workers more accessible.

Paywatch is a next-generation Employee Assistance Program (EAP), whose mission is to improve the financial health of employees. Anchored by its market-leading EWA service, Paywatch is built on a strict zero-debt philosophy. It provides access only to wages already earned, carries zero interest, and is designed to reduce reliance on informal credit while building long-term financial capacity. While one of the most frequent use cases for EWA is covering medical payments, Paywatch users can now pay for healthcare services at IMU Healthcare directly from wages earned before payday.

While launching in Malaysia as the primary market, MediPay is built as a scalable regional initiative. IMU Healthcare is part of IMU University, a premier health-focused university integrating education, research and healthcare to develop better healthcare professionals and ultimately improve patient care, in line with its One Health philosophy. Moreover, as Paywatch, operates across six countries in the region, its ambition is to continue to work with such innovative healthcare providers to bring this model of medical payments to new markets. Paywatch’s plan is to extend MediPay to high-density employment markets across Southeast Asia, including Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia, where rising corporate healthcare premiums and workforce productivity remain top priorities for multinational employers.

The rollout arrives at a critical juncture for domestic economic stability. Unmanaged workplace stress and health-related presenteeism are projected to drain an astounding RM34 billion annually from the Malaysian economy by 2030, roughly 1.4% of national GDP. Recent economic data reveals that 70.2% of the formal sector workforce earns RM5,000 or less per month, while a family of four in Kuala Lumpur requires approximately RM6,183 monthly to cover basic living expenses. This income-to-expense gap means out-of-pocket medical treatments are frequently deferred by employees, trapping talent in a cyclical downward spiral of physical exhaustion and professional burnout.

“When 80% of working Malaysians are living strictly paycheck to paycheck, an unexpected medical expense can tip an employee into serious financial distress. By partnering with IMU Healthcare, we are dismantling the month-end barrier to healthcare access. When an individual can seek proactive medical care using money they have already earned, we remove the need for high-cost loans, reduce chronic stress, and directly restore focus and productivity to the Malaysian workforce," said Richard Kim, Co-founder & CEO of Paywatch.
"At IMU Healthcare, we believe healthcare should be accessible when people need it, not only when they can afford it. We have long championed an integrated model of care, bringing together Conventional and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chiropractic, Oral Healthcare and other health disciplines within one ecosystem to provide holistic care for our patients. Our partnership with Paywatch addresses one of the biggest barriers to timely healthcare — affordability. By enabling employees to use wages they have already earned to access the care they need, we are helping more Malaysians seek care when they need it, rather than when they can afford it. This reflects our shared commitment to building a healthier and more resilient society," said Professor Dr Nazimah Idris, Medical Director & Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology, IMU Healthcare.

Through MediPay, available from September this year, employees at Paywatch-partnered corporations can bypass month-end cash flow restrictions entirely. Users simply open the Paywatch app, select from a curated suite of healthcare packages, and fund them directly via their real-time accrued salary basket. The partnership debuts with seven high-demand preventive and holistic health services, including health screenings and therapeutic treatments, with more to follow.

Unlike competing applications that operate as high-fee salary advances or unregulated micro-loans, Paywatch is the only EWA provider backed by major global institutional banks, enabling it to deliver services at the lowest transaction rates in the market. By channeling earned wages into preventive healthcare, MediPay ensures that early wage access builds long-term household and physical stability rather than compounding financial dependency.

For business and HR decision-makers, the cost of inaction is measurable. With 4 in 10 Malaysian employees actively planning to change employers within the next 12 months due to financial and workplace strain, and businesses losing an average of 73.1 productive days per employee annually to absenteeism and presenteeism, at an average cost of RM2.27 million per year for mid-to-large enterprises, reactive perks are no longer sufficient. While data shows that 46% of job seekers now actively look for EWA benefits when evaluating new roles, MediPay provides businesses with a solution that intercepts burnout before it leads to attrition, and signals to employees that their wellbeing is a priority as opposed to an afterthought – making Paywatch not just a wellness platform, but a talent retention strategy built on something employees have already worked for.
